Percent to Fraction Formula

A percent is a number out of 100. To convert a percentage to fraction form, put the percent value over 100 and simplify by dividing the top and bottom by their greatest common divisor.

For example, 12.5% becomes 12.5/100. Clearing the decimal gives 125/1000, and reducing by 125 gives 1/8.

fraction = percent / 100, then simplify

Three Worked Examples

1. A 37.5% off tag, written as a fraction

A jacket is marked 37.5% off. Start at 37.5/100. Multiply top and bottom by 10 to clear the decimal: 375/1000. The greatest common divisor of 375 and 1000 is 125, so the reduced fraction is 3/8. On a $96 jacket that is 3/8 of $96 = $36 off, leaving $60. Fractions make the mental math faster than the percentage does.

2. Scaling a recipe by 150%

A recipe needs to be scaled to 150%of its original size. 150/100 reduces to 3/2, or the mixed number 1 1/2. So 2/3 cup of flour becomes 2/3 × 3/2 = 1 cup exactly. Because the result is an improper fraction, the mixed number output is the one you want at the counter.

3. A 0.5% fee compared to a 1/200 share

A contract lists a 0.5% fee, and a second document lists the same fee as 1/200. Convert to check: 0.5/100 becomes 5/1000, which reduces to 1/200. They match. Converting both sides to a reduced fraction is the fastest way to confirm that two differently-worded rates are the same number.

Common Mistakes

  • Stopping at 25/100 instead of reducing it to 1/4.
  • Treating 12.5% as 12.5/10 instead of 12.5/100.
  • Assuming percentages above 100% cannot become improper fractions.
  • Typing a rounded percent like 33.33% when you need the exact fraction 1/3.

Caveats and Privacy Notes

  • The converter simplifies the exact number you type, including decimal places.
  • Repeating percentages need fraction notation outside this tool for perfect exactness.
  • Your input stays local in the browser and is not stored or sent to a server.
  • Very large values can produce large fractions, but ordinary classroom and business percentages work instantly.

Understanding Percentage to Fraction Conversion

Meet Lena. Her worksheet says a discount applies to 12.5% of a price, but the answer key uses fractions. The useful move is not guessing a familiar fraction. It is converting the percent into a fraction and reducing it until no common factor remains.

Percent means per 100, so every percent starts with the same denominator: 100. Whole-number percentages are direct. 40% becomes 40/100, then 2/5. Decimal percentages need one extra step. 2.5% becomes 2.5/100, then 25/1000, then 1/40.

The biggest trap is rounding. 33.33% is not exactly 1/3. It is 3333/10000. If your source is rounded, the fraction will be rounded too. That is fine for many quick estimates, but it matters in algebra, recipe scaling, probability, and any place where exact fractions are expected.

Use this percent to fraction converter when you need a reduced fraction quickly, want to compare a percentage with a ratio, or need to rewrite a percentage for a formula. For schoolwork, show the setup as percent/100 and the simplification step. For everyday use, the reduced fraction and mixed number are usually the most readable results.

Fractions are one of three interchangeable ways to write the same quantity. 12.5% is 1/8 is 0.125. If the decimal is what you actually need for a spreadsheet formula, the percent to decimal converter skips the fraction step entirely. If you are starting from a decimal instead, run it through the decimal to percent converter first.

Which Converter Do You Actually Need?

Percent to Fraction FAQ

How do you convert percent to fraction?

Remove the percent sign, place the number over 100, then reduce the fraction. For example, 12.5% becomes 12.5/100, which is the same as 125/1000 and reduces to 1/8.

Why does 25% become 1/4?

Percent means per 100, so 25% starts as 25/100. Divide the numerator and denominator by 25 and the reduced fraction is 1/4.

Can a percentage become an improper fraction?

Yes. Percentages above 100% convert to fractions greater than 1. For example, 125% is 125/100, which reduces to 5/4 or 1 1/4 as a mixed number.

What happens with repeating percentages like 33.333%?

The converter uses exactly the decimals you type. 33.333% becomes 33333/100000, while 33.333333% becomes 33333333/100000000. Use 33 1/3% when you need the exact fraction 1/3.

Should I type the percent sign?

Either format works. You can enter 12.5 or 12.5%, and the converter treats both as a percent value before simplifying the fraction.

Is my percent value stored?

No. The percent to fraction conversion runs locally in your browser. Your input is not sent to a server, saved to an account, or placed in the page URL.
