A jacket is marked 37.5% off. Start at 37.5/100. Multiply top and bottom by 10 to clear the decimal: 375/1000. The greatest common divisor of 375 and 1000 is 125, so the reduced fraction is 3/8. On a $96 jacket that is 3/8 of $96 = $36 off, leaving $60. Fractions make the mental math faster than the percentage does.
2. Scaling a recipe by 150%
A recipe needs to be scaled to 150%of its original size. 150/100 reduces to 3/2, or the mixed number 1 1/2. So 2/3 cup of flour becomes 2/3 × 3/2 = 1 cup exactly. Because the result is an improper fraction, the mixed number output is the one you want at the counter.
3. A 0.5% fee compared to a 1/200 share
A contract lists a 0.5% fee, and a second document lists the same fee as 1/200. Convert to check: 0.5/100 becomes 5/1000, which reduces to 1/200. They match. Converting both sides to a reduced fraction is the fastest way to confirm that two differently-worded rates are the same number.
