How This Tool Works
The Scribner Scale is a standard method used in the lumber industry to estimate board footage. Our calculator simplifies this process by requiring only three key measurements: the nominal width, the thickness (or radial dimension), and the length of the piece of timber. Unlike cubic volume calculations, the Scribner scale accounts for the actual usable yield when milling.
When you enter these dimensions—for instance, a 12-inch wide board that is 6 inches thick and measures 16 feet long—the tool applies the established Scribner formula. It processes these inputs to provide a quick, industry-standard estimate of the usable lumber yield in board feet (BF). This ensures your calculation aligns with how local sawmills typically measure rough-sawn material.
Simply input your measurements and hit calculate. The resulting number represents the estimated recoverable volume, giving you a reliable starting point for budgeting and planning your lumber purchase or sale.
