How This Tool Works
The conversion from Candela (cd) to Lumen (lm) requires understanding the difference between luminous intensity and total luminous flux. Candela measures light output in a specific direction—it is an angular measurement of brightness, like pointing a flashlight at you. Lumens, however, measure the total amount of visible light emitted by a source, regardless of direction.
Our converter uses established photometric principles to accurately translate directional intensity into total flux. Essentially, it helps calculate what the overall power output (lumens) would be if you knew the peak brightness in one direction (candela). For example, knowing a spotlight produces 10,000 cd allows us to estimate its potential luminous flux range.
- Input: Luminous intensity in Candela (cd).
- Process: Application of conversion constants and source geometry assumptions.
- Output: Total luminous flux in Lumens (lm).
By simplifying this complex calculation, you get a reliable estimate for lighting planning and fixture specification.
